Anxiety in some cases is a perfectly normal and healthy response. It is normal, e.g. to feel a little anxious before a demanding interview or exam, and the anxiety may even be useful - spurring us on to complete revision or preparation.
Anxiety only becomes a problem when it is excessive, where the response is out of proportion to the threatening situation, or prolonged, or where anxiety is experienced without there being any objective, external reason for it. Unfortunately, life gives rise to many genuine sources of anxiety, and abnormal anxiety can give rise to many physical symptoms, ranging from tight muscles, through digestive problems, mirgraine, allergies and insomnia to heart disease, and is a predisposing factor in many other serious illnesses.
In aromatherapy there is a valuable alternative to the psychotropic drugs and muscle relaxants that are commonly used in treating anxiety allopathically. There are quite a few sedative essential oils, blended together, that can help enormously.
A warm bath before bedtime with a few drops of Lavender essential oil is wonderful (believe me I do this). I am making up blended essential oil roll ons in a 10ml bottle, blended in coconut oil. Just roll on the pulse points, such as wrists, elbow, temples if you have a headache, and gently massage into the skin.
